Modern Botany : Natural Deodorant

As summer begins, so does our search for the perfect deodorant. And we’re happy to report that at The Amazing Blog, we’ve found the optimal match for our needs; Modern Botany's Natural Deodorant. What we love about this award-winning Irish brand Modern Botany, is that it’s inspired by the principles of botanical science, utilising the best natural product sourced from Ireland and all over the world.

In 2016, Modern Botany was developed and co-founded by John Murray CEO, and pharmacognosist Dr Simon Jackson in West Cork, Ireland. Dr Simon Jackson is the founder of several companies, including the award-winning Dr Jackson's Natural Skincare. Dr Jackson has a rich background, including 20 years of worldwide expeditions and research; fascinated by the study of ethnobotany (a cultural and regional study of people and their relationship with indigenous plants). He went on an expedition to Indonesia, where he decided to continue learning and returned to London to complete his PhD in pharmacognosy. In an interview with The Clean Beauty Edit, Dr Jackson said, "In setting up skincare brands like Modern Botany, I was able to use this as a vehicle to transfer this knowledge of the natural world, and the wealth of learning I had obtained through the years both academically and also first-hand from ethnic communities from around the world." Modern Botany started with the simple belief - it's time to do better by creating personal care products that are kind to our bodies and the planet. Sustainability and inclusivity are of paramount importance to the Modern Botany brand; Dr Jackson said, "Likewise, sustainability was always going to be a central element to the brand DNA in terms of ingredient sourcing, production, and packaging. Inclusivity is also very important to the brand as the universal flavour of our products were designed to keep the focus on skin and problem skin and not gender per see." Modern Botany focuses heavily on their ‘Power of Five’ - Flaxseed for giving, Borage for gratitude, Seaweed for loving, Calendula for nature, and Chamomile for sleep. They also believe that no more than five or six key ingredients should be used in any one formulation and that a good product should have multiple uses and be suitable for all skin types. Modern Botany’s products are made in Good Manufacturing Practice facilities, are all 100% natural and’ Cosmos Natural’ as a minimum benchmark only using botanical and mineral extracts. They were awarded 'The Best New Brand' at the 2021 CEW UK Beauty Awards. Furthermore, the Natural Deodorant won ‘Best Natural Deodorant- Spray’ at the 2022 Beauty Shortlist Wellbeing Awards.

The Modern Botany Natural Deodorant is a unisex natural spray-on 100ml deodorant made with powerful plant-based active ingredients. They also offer the option of a 25ml travel-size or a 500ml refill bottle for when you run out. As members of 1% For The Planet, Modern Botany donates 1% of its revenue to environmental causes. The deodorant is made from astringent and deodorising active ingredients, which naturally counteract underarm bacteria and prevent odour. We love that it can also be used as a multipurpose product such as a body mist or perfume. The blend of 11 essential oils leaves the underarms with a clean, fresh scent, a delicate and natural fragrance. The formula is clinically and dermatologically tested, suitable for all skin types and contains no parabens, petrochemicals, or aluminium salts. With more and more health issues being linked to cosmetic ingredients, it is vital for consumers to know exactly what their products are made of, which is why Modern Botany is very transparent with its ingredients. Here these include witch hazel, water, lavender, sandalwood, eucalyptus leaf, vetivert, coriander, lemon tea tree, clove leaf cedarwood, frankincense and chamomile.

Let’s look at the ingredients in more depth: Witch hazel is derived from bark and has a fresh woody scent and has traditionally been used as a natural astringent and an anti-inflammatory for centuries. Lavender, apart from its floral signature scent, has strong germ-fighting, antibacterial and relaxing properties. Sandalwood has a sweet woody scent and is traditionally used for skin disorders and as an antimicrobial. Eucalyptus has a camphoraceous aroma and is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial. Vetivert has slightly citrusy/soapy notes and has good antiseptic properties. Coriander has a lemon/nutty/spicy scent, it can be used as a skin detoxifier and is rich in powerful antioxidants like vitamin C. The lemon tea tree has a zesty scent and is a strong skin healer helping to eliminate microbes and fungi. The frankincense has an aromatic sweet, warm woody and soft balsamic scent and is often used for wound healing as it’s cytophylactic (protects the cells of the organism). Clove leaf has a spicy/woody/warm sweet scent used for skin-calming and is anti-bacterial. Chamomile has a herbal/ floral scent and is also a soothing, hypoallergenic and anti-inflammatory agent. And finally, with its sweet wood scent cedarwood, is good for skin-calming, particularly for those with rashes or eczema.

Many antiperspirants aim to block the body from sweating and releasing toxins. The natural way, however, is with this formula which allows the body to sweat and also helps to minimise perspiration. With its key ingredient of witch hazel, it closes the pores and tightens the underarm skin, promoting the healthy function of the sweat glands and reducing perspiration. it has a fresh and subtle scent and makes a superb effective deodorant for our morning routine. Plus, because we like the fragrance, it’s another quick spritz to freshen up at midday and in the evening. It’s another one of our #amazingfinds and one we heartily recommend. To purchase the 100ml Modern Botany Natural Deodorant for £22, see here, or for the 500ml refill at £84 here. NB, apologies, we’ve just seen that due to its popularity - it seems to have sold out! Organic Works: Bergamot Hand Wash

handwashpsd.jpg

Washing your hands is the best way to kill germs and prevent infectious diseases from spreading. Especially during this pandemic, we find ourselves in a constant cycle of washing our hands just to avoid getting sick, and then applying hand cream when the hard London water dries them out. We’ve been looking for the a natural and moisturising hand wash to use at The Amazing Blog  to keep our hands clean, healthy and soft. This is when we found heard about an award-winning Bergamot Hand Wash from Organic Works

Initially known as Organic SurgeOrganic Works decided to rebrand itself as Organic Works after a fire started at a neighbouring warehouse in the winter of 2019, which destroyed all of its products and stock. Organic Works have more than 50 years experience in the world of natural, organic and clean beauty; making them trailblazer with their much-loved formulas and philosophy: ‘Organics that truly Work’. This family-run business manufactures focusing on fresh and natural ingredients with no preservatives. Everything is made in small batches, which means that rather than mass production, the products are handcrafted and made in small amounts to ensure the best quality. As a privately owned, vegan, cruelty-free, organic brand, it also values transparency and sustainability. Its products use not only sustainably sourced and traceable ingredients, but also have minimal and recyclable packaging. All of which we applaud.

Because of its clean yet effective formula, Organic Works Bergamot Hand Wash  won the Best New Natural Product in the Pure Beauty Awards London 2020. It is 100% cruelty-free and great for all skin types, especially for sensitive skin. As a clean beauty product, 98.89% of its total ingredients come from natural sources, and 96.34% of the total plant-based ingredients are from organic farming. It’s formulated with aloe extract and several coconut-derived cleansing agents, which gently wash away impurities and keeps our skin silky smooth. Enriched with sweet orange and bergamot oils, it has a distinctive soft citrus fragrance combining the tropical orange and bergamot scent. Plus, the essential oils contained in the formula provide long-lasting protection against bacteria and dryness, and the therapeutic properties here can boost mood and awaken the senses. Best of all it leaves hands fragrant and soft – we can’t wait to try more from this brand. To purchase the 300ml Organic Works Bergamot Hand Wash at £10 for 300ml, see here. And when you’ve reached the end of the bottle, they offer a BIG 1000ml refill for this too at £27!

Setunea – Dead Sea Mud Body Wash & Honey Infusion Soap

Seturna.jpg

Finding natural, clean and simple artisan soaps has been our recent mission at The Amazing Blog trying to declutter the bathroom and find good multitaskers. Today we’d like to introduce you to Setunea who use ingredients and methods dating back to the biblical times with their olive oil-based soaps and body washes.

Founder of Setunea, Waleed Kamhieh was curious about how the market would receive sustainable, all-natural, and organic soaps. “Setunea was born out of an idea of introducing a centuries-old olive oil soap recipe to the modern consumer and try to meet the growing global demand for chemical-free organic products.” He decided to launch the brand at a Natural Products Global Exhibition in London during 2018. Seeing that their 100% chemical-free products were a hit, especially with people looking for sensitive skin-friendly products, they decided to carry on sharing the wonders of olive oil from Nablus, a city located between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal near the Dead Sea. This is where olive farming and manufacturing has been part of the local heritage for almost a millennium. All of Setunea’s products are sustainably farmed and manufactured, as the olive oil is directly sourced from family-run farms where products are handcrafted by a family business that has continuously produced olive oil soap since 1611. The pure extra-virgin, cold-pressed olive oil constitutes 80% of the soaps. This olive oil is packed with nutrients and super-antioxidants and the skin will never feel tight or dry after using a Setunea soap no matter how sensitive it is. And if it does, Setunea promises to refund you under 30 days. Best of all their products are vegan, cruelty-free and formulated without any other chemicals, and their packaging is made from recyclable paper-based materials.

Let’s start with the initial product that caught our eye their Dead Sea Mud Body Wash. rare blend of Dead Sea mud and olive oil, this unique two-in-one cleanses and heals the skin. Dead Sea mud has been used for healing the skin since biblical times; it has an extraordinary calming result on highly sensitive and problem skin with conditions like psoriasis, eczema, or keratitis. This minimalist formula has only four ingredients: Olive oil, food-grade lye (soda), water, and Dead Sea mud. The salt minerals work together here with the purest olive oil to gently cleanse the body restoring the skin’s PH balance and effectively hydrating and fortifying the dermis. If you have trouble coping with one of the skin conditions (mentioned above), we recommend this as your next go-to gentle body wash. This formula comes in a recyclable plastic 250ml bottle. It has slightly vanilla/nutty fragrance and is a translucent pale brown-olive greenish and lathers up well. To use, put a small amount on damp skin and massage in, then rinse off. We found that our skin felt cleansed and incredibly soft after use - its another one of our #amazingfinds. This gentle 2-in-1 is available for purchase at 250ml with a price of £9.00 here.

The next product that we tried is from their traditionally hand-crafted collection of Natural Olive Oil Soap. The Honey Infusion Soap bar is also clean in composition with simple ingredients of olive oil, honey, coconut oil, glycerin, food-grade lye (soda), and water.  The making these soaps are by a century’s old method, where the saponification process takes place in a large heated vat where the olive oil, lye and water are carefully combined for several hours before the mixture is laid out on a horizontal surface in a flat layer. Once the soap is hard enough, individual squares are marked out, hand-cut by an artisan who then expertly carves out each bar of soap. Finally, the soap bars are stacked in drying towers. Because this manufacturing process includes drying the soaps for five months, the bars do not reduce or turn to mush like industrial soap bars – so well worth the extra price point! This lightly honey-scented soap lathers nicely on the skin, leaving it smooth and thoroughly hydrated, even several hours after drying. Like the Dead Sea Mud Body wash, this Honey Infusion soap bar is excellent for dry, damaged, and sensitive skins. Note that being a soap with a clean formula, it can be used for the whole body: hair, hands, and body wash, just like the full range of Setunea’s Natural Olive Oil Soap bars. It is 100g wrapped in recyclable packaging, where you can purchase this highly nourishing soap for £5.00 here or a choice of their two full collections of six bars for £25 here.

PURU Suisse – Pure Sunscreen SPF50

PURU.jpg

We’ve already spoken about two other natural SPF sunscreen brands recently on The Amazing Blog and this is the last of the three for us to review.  Meet PURU Suisse, with their Pure Sunscreen SPF 50. BTW they’ve changed their packaging since we received this; however, we’re told that the ingredients remain the same.

PURU Suisse brand was born out of a frustration of not being able to find 100% natural products in Switzerland. According to Paul Flato, CEO and MD of the brand, PURU guarantees that each of their products is 100% natural, where every ingredient is checked before they process them into each of their products. These food-grade ingredients are handmade in small batches by their certified production lab. By purchasing PURU products, you can help preserve the environment from additional toxins and pollutants plus their packaging is 100% recyclable.  Flato commented in a recent interview: “We are focusing to deliver not just organic but really 100% pure, natural and honest products to our customers. We are a brand you can really trust without even checking or thinking about the ingredients. Furthermore, we want to educate and make our society/customers aware of how harmful certain ingredients for the human body are.” The brand promises 100% satisfaction to its customers and the quality of the products speaks for themselves. PURU loves animals, so they support causes that help animals and plant life. For this reason, none of their formulas is ever tested on animals.

PURU means purity, and that what’s excites us, especially when it comes to sun care. The Pure Sunscreen SPF 50, is a recent winner at 2020 international organic awards, this is a mineral-based sunscreen which contains non-nano zinc oxide. The great thing about this mineral UV filter is that it does not penetrate the skin, or disintegrate under UV radiation, is harmless to the environment and considered the safest and most effective sunblock ingredient today. You can scan this sun care and find all ingredients on the YUKA app. Let’s start with the organic coconut oil, which is a deep hydrator and will leave skin smooth as it’s a natural-based emollient. The coconut extract will also act as a skin conditioner. The organic cacao seed butter here is one of the most potent skin healers and very protective; with its natural source of antioxidants and saturated fatty acids which are especially beneficial for healing dry, cracked skin. It is also rich in natural plant compounds called phytochemicals which will improve the blood flow on into your skin and slow the skin from ageing by protecting it from UV rays. This sun lotion is also rich in organic beeswax, straight from the honeycomb, and has anti-inflammatory properties in the beeswax which encourage healing of wounds. It also offers a protective skin barrier soothing sunburn without clogging pores. Furthermore, beeswax is high in vitamin A, which has been found to support cell reconstruction. Finally, vitamin E oil can absorb the energy from UV light and reduce damage. What we like about PURU Sunscreen is that it is highly concentrated, won’t sting your eyes, and it is reef and lake safe. There are no allergens, no irritants, no petroleum, or harmful substances. However, we found that when applied it does leave a slight white residue on the skinIt is non-greasy and almost fragrance-free (it has a subtle coconut/honey scent) which we liked. PURU advises applying their sunscreen every 2 hours, especially if you’re in and out of the water, although they say it’s water-resistant for up to 45 minutes. This is one to pack away for travels to the winter sunshine; it’s suitable for all the family, including babies. What makes this product a great sun protector, is the fact that it is made with a limited amount of all-natural ingredients and contains the mineral-based sunscreen too. You can purchase the 100ml bottle here for £30.95 and get a free lip balm too!

Carina Organics - Unscented Natural Body Deodorant

Carina.jpg

We at The Amazing Blog know how important it is to stay fresh while living our busy and sometimes hectic lives. Whether we are running daily errands, going to the gym, or travelling; we all want to feel protected from unpleasant odours. We also love discovering new brands that have natural or organic products that are vegan friendly, not tested on animals and free from nasty chemicals.  That’s why we tried and tested this fragrance -free natural deodorant for sensitive skin Unscented Natural Body Deodorant by Carina Organics

Carina Organics is based in Vancouver and aims to provide 100% natural products, completely free of synthetics, parabens, fragrances, gluten and dyes. Founded by Helmut Gollner, who migrated from Germany to Canada and whose passion for homeopathic skin and haircare led him on this journey to launch Carina Organics. Since Carina’s inception in 1972, its main focus and philosophy is to create self-care products by replacing chemical ingredients with natural and organic ones. Gollner believes that nature provides the means to keep our skin healthy and beautiful, which is why  Carina takes great pride in their formulas and the quality of the ingredients they use. All of Carina products are manufactured by hand on the North Shore of Vancouver, where they produce a wide range of hair, face, body and baby care.

We chose to review their Unscented Natural Body Deodorant, as one of our bugbears is heavily fragranced deodorants. Although we all like to smell fragrant, it can also conflict with our chosen scent of the day; i.e. a heavily scented floral deodorant clashing with a delicate fresh cologne. What we love about Carina’s Unscented Natural Body Deodorant is that it’s produced using only natural and non-staining mineral salts. It protects the skin for up to 24 hours, leaving it fresh and odour-free, making it impossible for bacteria to develop. Made of only three simple ingredients: Filtered water, potassium alum, and pine extract, this deodorant is hypoallergenic, 100% biodegradable, cruelty-free and vegan.  Applied with 5-6 pumps of the spray under each arm or on any other desired area of the body, it dries quickly and is long-lasting. The Unscented Natural Body Deodorant was sent to us via Live in the Light, a UK online store which distributes their products. With a holistic approach, Live in The Light believes that skincare products that we use in our daily regime have an impact on our health, and supplies only high quality natural and organic products, just like this Unscented Natural Body Deodorant which you can purchase here for £13.50.
