BodyBees : Bee Gone - Outdoor Balm

As we're now in the midst of the summer festival season, we thought it an appropriate time to talk about warding off those far too frequent uninvited, flying insects! At The Amazing Blog, we're not fans of those chemical insect repellents with all their harsh toxins; we prefer to use natural and essential oil-based products. This was when we discovered BodyBees, and their effective hydrating Bee Gone - Outdoor Balm, which is 100% safe for skin, and has the added bonus (not something they advertise) of keeping mosquitoes at bay.

BodyBees is a Swedish family-owned natural skincare brand based in Danderyd, Sweden. Founded in 2019 by Lars Jacobi and his daughter Therese Fal'en, it all began because Lars struggled to find a cure for his eczema. However, this all changed when he visited South Africa, where he discovered some of their healing ingredients, i.e. honey and propolis, which literally "changed his life." From this moment on, he began experimenting and creating his own skincare as a way of also helping others. The brand now collaborates with local producers in South Africa for their natural and organic ingredients, with the hero base for their balms: beeswax and olive oil. They firmly believe in nature's way of healing, restoring, and protecting the skin. Therese told us, "I think it is fascinating how powerful these ingredients are in all their simplicity. When I used them myself and on my children, I actually realised that they help keep me and my family’s skin to stay protected and hydrated, as well as bringing a sense of wellness to everyone." For BodyBees, sustainability is at the brand's core, together with monitoring each batch of products to ensure all ingredients used are natural, organic and safe. They currently have a range of four balms, including one that's fragrance-free and suitable for babies.

We tried Bee Gone - Outdoor Balm, which has recently scooped up an award (think the Swedish Beauty Oscars, see here) with 'Best Protection'. To quote these awards, "Bee Gone is nature's own recipe and works well when it comes to keeping mosquitoes away. As well as caring and effective at the same time." Although the brand is careful not to promote Bee Gone as an insect-repelling balm, as they don't have the official product registration to make this claim; they are, however, quick to point out that it is an all-natural outdoor balm with many different uses.

What we like is that it's only made with four simple ingredients. These include the essential oils of citronella, lemongrass, beeswax and olive oil, all of which make it super-nourishing for the skin. Citronella, of course, is one of those ingredients which helps to repel insects. Combine this with lemongrass, another natural insect repellent, and you have ingredients which are both anti-inflammatory and antifungal, as well as gentle enough even for the most sensitive skin.

The base combines water-resistant beeswax and olive oil, rich in vitamins; they form a protective barrier and shield the skin from toxins while also supporting natural hydration. The blend creates a powerful antioxidant with an antibacterial effect for healing, moisturising, and all-important skin replenishment. When asked, Therese told us about her inspiration behind this product, "The Bee Gone Outdoor balm is one we created for our own use as a family. It's the perfect product to fill a much-needed gap in the skincare market. In Sweden, we all love being outside in nature, so we wanted to create a hydrating skin balm that contained citronella and lemongrass, to ward off insects, and to leave the skin with a fresh scent."

As someone who is usually feasted upon by pesky mosquitoes, I was a little apprehensive to try this as a repellent. When applied, it smells fresh and zesty, giving the skin a smooth and hydrated feel. Lo and behold, for the first time, I can confirm that the mosquitoes left me alone; they weren't even buzzing around my head. Result! However, the brand does recommend reapplying Bee Gone every four hours as a top-up to keep skin safe.

Another of our #amazingfinds, we'd highly recommend this pocket-sized tube of outdoor protection for the whole family to keep skin protected, moisturised and nourished. To purchase the 40ml push-up tube of BodyBees Bee Gone Outdoor Balm for £14, see here.

Aura Organics : Mango & Orange Cleansing Oil

How do you cleanse? Is it with a one-off cleanse and rinse? Or perhaps, it was like us, with a double cleanse using a cleansing oil and then followed by a water-based toner. Whichever way it is, we want to introduce you to a single cleanse, with this oil-to-milk Aura Organics Mango & Orange Cleansing Oil from Aura Cosmetics. It's a discovery from Edwina's 2022 Beauty Shortlist Awards judging; and one that also wowed us with its exceptional performance and moreish fruity fragrance. A little while ago, on The Amazing Blog, we also reviewed their wonderful Exfoliating Face Mask, see here.

Aura Organics are a London-based indie natural and organic skincare brand. Founded by the holistic practitioner, formulator, and spa owner Danielle Andrean, whose experience in working in mainstream skincare revealed many unnatural and problematic ingredients, which were not only lacking in nutritional value but causing skin irritation in her clients. This began her mission to launch her own skincare with Aura Organics, a name that comes from the Latin word for a ‘breath of fresh air’. Alongside her existing knowledge, and study of organic cosmetic chemistry, it was the start of this natural, organic and cruelty-free skincare range. All products are made in small batches and are free from harsh chemicals, synthetic fragrances, and harmful toxins. It's important to Danielle that her products contain natural and organic ingredients that align with her holistic brand ethos. This small, family-run business seeks to inspire and educate people on the importance of natural skincare and is committed to sustainable living with both products and packaging materials, that are recyclable, biodegradable and refillable to reduce pollution and waste.

In addition to developing an organic skincare range, Danielle also launched Aura Organics Spa. The spa uses its own range of holistic and organic products paired with ancient healing remedies, allowing them to create individually tailored treatments and globally inspired wellness rituals. They aim to provide a relaxing experience that promotes physical and mental well-being. Apart from treatments, their wellness studio offers a variety of yoga, pilates, and meditation classes to suit all levels. To adhere to their sustainability ethos, even the yoga mats are made with renewable harvested tree rubber and recycled materials that are free of PVC and latex. They also run a free community meditation class to make yoga and meditation accessible to all.

Their award-winning Aura Organics Mango & Orange Cleansing Oil , really caught our eye. It’s packaged in a stylishly frosted metallic glass bottle, which protects the special ingredients from harmful sunlight and contamination from plastics. A vegan blend of mango extract, organic orange peel oil, vitamin C, and magnesium helps to hydrate, soothe, brighten and fight acne breakouts. Organic gotu kola (AKA centella asiatica) has been used for centuries in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine and strengthens the skin while brightening dull-looking. Finally, beta carotene, a natural vitamin A form, helps boost the skin's defence and signs of ageing.

All the organic oils present are for cleansing and nourishing. The grapeseed and sunflower oil are rich in vitamin E, for the repair of the skin’s barrier, both are highly absorbent and won’t clog pores. Olive, peach kernel, castor, orange peel and rosehip are all rich in antioxidants and offer anti-inflammatory properties that fight bacteria and moisturise. Rosehip and sweet almond oil are is high in vitamins A, E, zinc and linoleic acid, all of which boost collagen production and hydrate.

If you wonder why oils are used for cleansing, it’s because they are non-comedogenic and bond with any makeup or grime. Did you know that your skin is home to over 1,000 species of bacteria? Quickly added, these are not all bad bacteria, in fact, the skin offers a variety of distinct ecosystems, with communication between bacteria, skin cells and immune cells. Unfortunately, washing the skin is completely out of sync with the needs of our skin, and damages the good bacteria making it harder for the skin to retain moisture. As a result, it disrupts the skin’s pH level. However, by using an oil cleanser, you are supporting your skin’s army of healthy bacteria. This interaction helps to reinforce, repair and bolster the barrier formed by the skin, and acts as a barrier to protect the skin from pollutants locking in moisture. Why do we like cleansing oils? It’s because they work to remove any stubborn residue from sunscreens and are also very adept at dissolving all types of makeup. Many cleansing oils and balms now contain an emulsifier; this allows the oil to mix with water to form a milky emulsion, making only a single cleanse necessary, as they remove all makeup and grime, and rinse away without leaving any greasy excess.

As mentioned earlier, this organic cleansing oil has a delicious smell of mango and orange. We found the scent uplifted our spirits, and left our skin beautifully fragranced. We found that by massaging a small amount of this oil to milk cleanser, the light and silky texture dissolved makeup, and the deep cleansing oils targeted pollution and grime leaving skin soft and squeaky clean. For stubborn eye makeup, we used a reusable makeup pad, wet hands and a splash of water, then massaged the cleanser until it became a milky white emulsion - best of all, no eye stinging!. Then, with a quick final rinse, we were left with a clean, hydrated, glowing complexion! It gets top marks from us and is another of our #amazingfinds. Oodee: Aurora Perfecting Serum

After a small autumn break from The Amazing Blog, we’re back with more of our #amazingfinds for you to enjoy.

Let’s talk about sudden skin flare-ups that sometimes happen to us all; we’ll predict with this colder weather that we’re probably not the only ones experiencing irritated, blotchy and dry skin. So what to do? Step forward Oodee, a newly launched skincare that we discovered earlier this year at The CEW brand showcase. What excited us about Oodee is that it’s the first and only beauty brand to actively remove all known food and fragrance allergens from its products. We’re reviewing Oodee’s Aurora Perfecting Serum which, with its Allergen Neutral™ formula, excludes 14 major food allergens, 26 fragrance allergens and all known skin irritants. It offered the perfect solution to our sometimes moody skin, which is why we want to flag it up today.

Oodee was born out of the frustrations of two women, Karen Harwood and Victoria Tydeman. Karen is no stranger to the world of skincare and beauty, having worked for some of the most inspiring beauty companies, including L'Oréal and The Body Shop. Despite this, she struggled with painful and stressful flare-ups for over a decade, trying everything to soothe her skin but to no avail. Frustrated with skincare, she made a shift to the food industry. The free-form movement was trending during this time, demanding allergen awareness in food. It made Karen wonder if the allergens found in skincare products, but were absent in food, were the cause for her flare-ups. Victoria, the founder of Japanese wonder-cream Steam Cream, took notice. It wasn't long until the pair, and a team of highly skilled skincare experts set off to create the world’s first Allergen Neutral™ skincare solution that eliminated food and fragrance allergens. Oodee was founded in 2018, and Karen’s skin issues were finally laid to rest. "Being the researcher I am, it was clear to me that Oodee's Allergen Neutral™ skin care could help many others beyond myself. I discovered that 58% of people have experienced a skin flare-up, and 90% don't know why. It turns out that there are millions of people like me," commented Karen. A revolutionary skincare brand aiming to make Allergen Neutral™ the new gold standard, Oodee is the first and only brand to actively eliminate all known food and fragrance allergens from its products while proudly incorporating innovative science, plant power, formula first and being sustainably minded too. To quote Karen, “If you wouldn’t eat something you’re intolerant or allergic to, why would you put it on your skin?”

Through fermentation and gemmotherapy (a comprehensive energetic cell therapy), Oodee’s radical green chemistry distils the essence of its ingredients to obtain superior benefits, resulting in exceptional, scientifically proven results. Oodee employs powerful superfoods, like collagen-boosting prickly pear and calming Atlantic kelp, to get the finest natural, innovative and nutrient-rich ingredients nature has to offer. With a strong belief in quality over quantity, Oodee’s products simply contain potent Allergen Neutral™ formulas are boosted with DermaRDE+™, a one-of-a-kind multivitamin blend comprising 22 vital nutrients, superfoods and botanical actives for healthy, happy skin. Among the 22 essential nutrients, you can find niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, amino acids, pre and postbiotics, enzymes, iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, essential fatty acids, omega 6, omega 9, antioxidants, as well as vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, C, E and H. As if it couldn’t get any better, Oodee’s products are cruelty-free, vegan, and manufactured using green chemistry methods, with recyclable packaging and even upcycled ingredients where possible.

Oodee’s Aurora Perfecting Serum is radiance in a bottle, to say the least. This ultra-light serum is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatories to help boost the skin’s natural ceramides for a desirably smooth, firm and dewy finish completed with a beautiful afterglow. Much like Oodee’s other products, the brand’s Aurora Perfecting Serum contains its unique Allergen Neutral™ formula, which excludes 14 food and 26 fragrance allergens, along with 22 vital nutrients packed in its one and only DermaRDE+™ multivitamin powershot blend. The beneficial ingredients don't end there; the serum also consists of shiso sprouts, shizandra berries (both pictured above), black cumin, Irish moss and arginine. Sustainably grown shiso sprouts boost radiance through potent antioxidants, and essential fatty acids that slow ageing and reduce oxidative stress. The advantages of shizandra berries and black cumin don't fall far behind. Shizandra berries carry calming properties that reduce redness and imperfections plus improve the skin’s radiance banishing breakouts. At the same time, black cumin's abundance in essential fatty acids and ceramides nourishes and restores the skin’s natural barrier function. Furthermore, Irish moss is a super alga loaded with mineral salts, amino acids and vitamins, visibly improving the skin's appearance, protecting against external aggressors and reducing ageing and inflammation. Last but not least, arginine, a potent amino acid, increases the skin’s visible hydration levels, protects against damaging free radicals and helps support collagen production while balancing PH.

To experience the benefits, massage 2-3 pumps of the serum onto a cleansed face and neck during morning and night. The brand recommends pairing it with Oodee’s 3-Step Phenomenal Skin Edit for optimal results. First, start with Oodee’s Halo Purifying Foaming Cleanser, a silky-soft non-drying cleanser starring rice protein and Prickly Pear to purify and hydrate the skin, followed by the Aurora Perfecting Serum, and end with Oodee’s Nova Illuminating Moisturiser, a potent, supercharged mix of Vitamin C and biodynamic buckwheat sprouts to protect, plump and boost luminosity.

Back to the Aurora Perfecting Serum, the texture is slightly viscous and cloudy, with a very delicate prickly pear scent. What we love about this Aurora Perfecting Serum, is its two-in-one ability to reduce painful skin flare-ups with its anti-inflammatory properties, while simultaneously sustaining the skin through its highly restorative DermaRDE+™ multivitamin complex paired with the Allergen Neutral™ formula. Based on the research conducted by Oodee, stats say that 58% of respondents have experienced skin irritation or flare-up while using a beauty product, and 93% of respondents stated that they felt more beauty products should consider people's allergies. Oodee listens to its consumer’s concerns, catering to this 93% in addressing skin irritation.

We found it very nourishing and yet weightless. It’s also quick to absorb, instantly soothing, and restores the skin’s hydration with its hyaluronic acid and special botanical actives; quickly added, this natural and adaptable serum is suitable for all skin types, not just sensitive ones. We think it’s a winter must-have. See here to purchase a 50ml bottle of Oodee’s Aurora Perfecting Serum at £65.00.

Connock London: Kukui Oil Room & Linen Mist

Looking to bring a fresh, exotic floral fragrance into the home? Then let us at The Amazing Blog introduce you to another of our #amazingfinds with Connock London’s Kukui Oil Room & Linen Mist. It’s from a sustainable and award-winning brand, best known for its unique scents, and is a recent winner of an Editor's Choice at the 2022 Wellbeing Beauty Shortlist Awards.

Amanda Connock founded Connock London in 2013, inspired by her passion for fragrance and her love for exotic and unique natural ingredients. Amanda spent her childhood sampling perfumes, making scented bath salts and creating floral waters in buckets from rose petals and cherry blossoms with her siblings. After achieving her degree, Amanda joined her family's business, A&E Connock, where she acquired her knowledge and experience working with global producers and sourcing speciality cosmetic ingredients. In an interview with Great British Life, she explained how she branched off from the running the family business with her brother to create her own business, "We were very young and although we succeeded with the business, which is still running today, I realised I wanted to go off on my own and do my own thing. I'm very much like my Dad in that respect." Thus Connock London was born. "It's very important for me to be able to tell my customers the source of the ingredients – where they come from and why we use them." As a business, Connock London focuses on sustainability and is committed to making changes contributing toward a better future. They now have new easy-to-use pump bottles made from 30% post-consumer recycled plastic, plus all of Connock London's products are cruelty-free. Connock London is proud to work alongside the Woodland Trust, and the Carbon Capture initiative helping to replenish the UK's native woodland from its outer packaging alone; this government scheme strives to reduce CO2 emissions by donating 100% of its charge back to the charity.

The Kukui Oil Room & Linen Mist is presented in a stylish frosted glass bottle and is part of Connock London's Home Fragrance collection. It is a floral fragrance with the exotic aroma of Hawaiian flowers, made with a high-quality blend of pure essential oils containing floral notes of gardenia and jasmine blended into a warm, woody base of sandalwood and vanilla. This Room & Linen Mist is 100ml alcohol-based and, as the name suggests, is designed for spritzing around the home, and to freshen up bed linen.

The kukui oil is sourced from a family in Hawaii that both Amanda and Connock have worked with for over 20 years. Hawaiians use their native kukui oil to keep the skin soft and smooth; it contains essential fatty acids - ideal for boosting the immune system and treating dry skin. Gardenia flower is traditionally used in Chinese medicine to help fight colds, and respiratory or sinus infections; and is said to be full of antibacterial, antioxidant and antiviral compounds. The plant also symbolises trust, hope, peace, renewal, and protection. In some cultures, jasmine is used as a natural sedative, much like lavender. Its sweet scent is known to help stress and anxiety and helps the body unwind. Not forgetting its aphrodisiac properties, which is why it’s a popular ingredient in massage oils. The sandalwood is sourced from the fragrant bark of India’s santalum trees, offering unique benefits to mental and physical health; it’s also used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine to promote calmness, lower stress and improve sleep quality. Vanilla, after saffron, is the second most expensive spice in the world. It’s known to be a mood-booster and has a calming effect on any sharper fragrance notes.

How would we describe the scent? Exotic with a nuance of warmth and complexity. It is a ‘floriental’, which means the woody base notes of sandalwood and slightly powdery and creamy vanilla, pair well with the floral heart notes of buttery gardenia and sweet-smelling jasmine. The mist is guaranteed to create a delicious and moreish scent throughout the house.

Connock London also has a Ceramic Disc which can be sprayed with the Kukui Oil Room & Linen Mist, then tied to hangers and door hooks to keep clothing smelling fresh - we even put it in the car! It makes an elegant statement while adding a light, fresh scent to wardrobes, drawers or luggage - in fact anywhere where it can be hung. A lovely way to maintain your clothing’s freshness, and imbue this delightful scent into your clothing, mischievously clinging to the top of your favourite summer shirt.

A fragrance that’s perfect for the summer, or for summoning up the feeling of a sultry summer’s eve in the middle of our cold wet winter months! As far as high-end fragrances go, we think that the luxury features and finishes of the packaging and its exotic aroma set this Kukui Oil Room & Linen Mist apart. To purchase the 100ml Kukui Oil Room & Linen Mist for £22, see here, or to buy the Kukui Scented Ceramic and 10ml Mist for £15, see here.

Ancienne Ambiance : Bacca Berry and Adriatica Fig Soaps

We believe that it’s always quality over quantity. This is why at The Amazing Blog we want to introduce you to one of our favourite luxury lifestyle brands, Ancienne Ambiance and their Adriatica Fig and Bacca Berry soaps. Not only do these help to keep skin soft and hydrated but are fragranced with delicate botanical extracts. If you’re curious to know more about the other products we’ve reviewed, then see here.

Founded by Adriana Carlucci in 2004, with a boutique expansion in 2014 in Chelsea, Ancienne Ambiance truly is a unique and wonderful brand. Adriana’s background in antiquities fuelled by her passion for fragrance inspired her to bring together the curation of these exceptional products. Historical elements and themes run through the entire range with either the ingredients or with the methods that the products have been created. Ancienne Ambiance brings history to life and embraces their corporate colour purple, often dubbed one of the papal and royal colours and a time-honoured symbolic colour with historical significance. The award-winning brand uses sustainable and ethical practices, which include no testing on animals and the use of recyclable packaging. Products range from perfumes to jewellery and skincare to candles, where each product also has its own story. Ancienne Ambiance produces some of the finest quality luxury lifestyle goods exclusively in the UK, France, Lebanon and Italy, all delivered in beautiful purple hand-crafted gift boxes.

We chose two of their soaps, The Bacca Berry soap and Adriatica Fig soap from their set of four here.  All the soaps are made in France using the traditional Savon de Marseille techniques, and each soap is made with safe, sustainable and ethically sourced ingredients. Beautifully embossed with the Ancienne Ambiance logo, these are made with a 100% vegetable oil base and includes key ingredients such as shea butter and coconut oil (as the natural glycerine). The shea butter, in particular, improves the skin’s natural barrier and protects the skin from environmental stressors. They lather well without the presence of SLS and are gentle enough to use on hands, face and body. Apart from the fragrance, we love how they both cleanse and hydrate the skin keeping it nourished and moisturised.

The Bacca Berry soap, they refer to it as berry-licious, and we couldn’t agree more! It’s a beautifully light and berry scented with hints of redcurrants and blackcurrants, all of which help cleanse and gently purify the skin. Translated from Latin, Bacca means berry, and it is also the botanical term used to describe a fruit that is a pulpy and juicy fruit with one or many seeds but not encased or with a stone. Historically, these succulent berries were included in soap to treat or cleanse impurities. This soap delivers a beautifully soft and gentle berry-like scent that gives a delicate fragrance to the skin.

The Adriatica Fig soap is another beautiful and luxurious soap with nourishing and moisturising qualities. This type of Mediterranean fig has fresh, top notes with green florals and green leaves and gives base notes of warmth and calm. The Adriatic Fig, a highly prized ingredient in ancient times and is known to symbolise rebirth, abundance, and prosperity.

We loved the gorgeous fresh fruity fragrance of these soaps, they’re almost too good to use. In fact, some people tuck soaps into an empty suitcase or even an underwear drawer to keep clothes smelling fresh. Not a bad idea! Also, did you know that the word soap originates from the Latin word ‘sapo’? Soap production dates back to around 2800 BC in ancient Babylon. The first known formula for soap was written on a Babylonian clay tablet around 2200 BC. It is said that soap was first discovered at the base of Sapo Hill in Rome by washerwomen who noticed while doing their laundry in the River Tiber that using cleansing substances like clay made for cleaner laundry. To quote Ancienne Ambiance, “Mother nature – or Demeter, the ancient Greek goddess of the earth’s fertility – provided everything the ancients needed to create effective products for beauty and wellbeing in a sustainable manner, so why change things?”  Why change things indeed!

To purchase BACCA Berry Soap 100g at £6 please see here, or for the ADRIATICA Fig Soap 100g at £6 please see here. Or with ten soaps in the collection you can build your own set of four soaps please see here.
