Butterflies in the Glasshouse

Say goodbye to grey skies and step into a world full of colour— or more than 50 species of free-flying butterflies. Spring is just around the corner, but if you’re anything like us here at The Amazing Blog, you’re always keeping an eye out for anything that makes you feel like you’re on holiday right now, preferably somewhere tropical. Butterflies in the Glasshouse is the perfect place to find refuge from the cold. They’re open from the 13th of January until the 4th of March in Wisley, so you can head on down to get an early taste of spring.

Fun fact: some butterfly species have adult lifespans that are as short as one week, while others, like the Monarch, live an average of nine months. We like this event because it is both family-friendly and educational. But, the beauty of the butterflies and cathedral-like glasshouse are sure to amaze people of all ages, while also providing the perfect photo-op. The Education Zone will turn you into a butterfly expert, as you learn about their lifecycles and even use a microscope to take a closer look at the intricate colour of their wings. Did you know that butterflies have taste receptors on their feet? Once you’ve finished admiring the real butterflies, you can pick up a delicious treat from the Taste of Wisley outlets and take a walk down to the lovely garden of butterfly sculptures.

Entry prices are £15.95 for adults and £8 for children 5-16 years, but if you buy online here you can get 10% off and you can also book a time slot to skip the queues here.

Movie Nights at the Natural History Museum

Forget Night at the Museum 1, 2, or even 3 for that matter - with apologies to Ben Stiller and his fellow castmates - here is the ultimate venue for all those Sci-Fi fans out there – Movie Nights at The Museum - as if all those fabulous exhibits aren’t enough, The Natural History Museum has teamed up with TimeOut to give you the chance to watch some of the more mind expanding films in the comfort of your own imagination - with a little atmospheric help from the spellbinding surroundings.

If like us at The Amazing Blog, Star Trek is your thing, then you are in for a major treat with a series of the franchise up for viewing throughout March 2018, but the powers that be, have played a blinder with their other choices ranging from E.T. through to Alien, so every persuasion is catered for. Check out the full list of options through their website here.

Screenings are set in the Hintze Hall, under Hope the Blue Whale, and you can settle down with a refreshment or two from the bar to chill out and enjoy whichever genre you have chosen. Tickets cost £28.00 and can be purchased through the museum’s website here; start times vary, so do ensure you check when booking. Nearest tube station is South Kensington.

Sadly, Dippy The Diplodocus who retired from view a few years ago won’t be around to join in all the fun, but there are plenty more prehistoric fish in the sea to provide suitable brainiac vibes.

Winterland evenings in London

If the February weather has you feeling down, look no further than an evening at Winterland in Fulham to lift your spirits! We here at The Amazing Blog are always on the hunt for a fun and unique way to spend a night out with friends and loved ones, so when we heard that Winterland was re-opening their doors due to popular demand, we knew we had to book our tickets straight away.

This event is the perfect way to impress someone on a date night by dining in an igloo that overlooks the river or even just another way to gather up all your friends for an unforgettable night out. Step into the enchanted forest and explore a world full of delicious wood-fired pizzas and fondues, while you warm-up with hot toddies or mulled wine. Of course, there is a full bar so you can be sure to find a drink to suit your tastes.

Once you’ve satisfied your cravings, you can then head on down for a round of mini-golf. If that isn’t your cup of tea, gather up a team for a game of curling or even try out a game of ping-pong and then beer (or Prosecco) pong; perfect for a duo. And what better way to end a night out than singing along to your favorite songs in their new Karaoke booth.

Winterland is open February 2nd – March 10th from 6pm-11pm on Thursday and Friday and 2pm-11pm on Saturday. General entry tickets are available in limited amounts at the door for £5 per person, but we think it’s best to book entry tickets as well as seating and activities, which vary in price, online here in advance to guarantee the best spot!

Friday Favourites: Face Masks

There is nothing better for your body and mind than the occasional pamper day. It is utterly imperative to take the time to give your face and body the attention it needs. We at The Amazing Blog follow a strict rule of giving ourselves a full-blown pamper session at least once a month because it helps us take a moment to breathe, reflect and slow down. Today we've featured a wide range of faces masks so whatever you skin type or budget we think we've got it covered!

If you are like us, then you’re in need of some interstellar relaxation, and the only brand that can meet such space-age promises is Spacemasks. We love that each mask has a stylish star-studded cover so you could literally use it anywhere; at home or on the go. Each box contains five masks guaranteed to whisk you to a world of peace.

These masks are the perfect way to get your well-deserved beauty rest. Scented with jasmine essence, these masks are incredibly soothing. Added bonus? They heat up when opened, which left us feeling warm and cosy. It was a fantastic way to literally melt away all the stress of the day and drift off to a more beautiful world as we slept.  It is so easy to use this product, just open the pouch and unfold the mask. Then gently place it over your eyes and fit the loops over your ears.  The mask will start heating up pretty quickly as the oxygen reacts with the iron particles in the product. Leave it on for 15 minutes as you drift off to a space far away from Earthly stresses.

For a better night’s sleep, reduce eye strain and relieve tiredness you can purchase your pack of 5 masks here for £15.00.

The second mask for your next pamper day that we would recommend is the Retexturing Radiance Mask from Lucia Magnani Skincare. One of most luxurious range of skincare that we've seen in a while, we all fell in love with this beautiful faux tortoise shell pot. This brand has a fundamental philosophy that helps them develop all of their products. They believe that their products should help bring out everyone's inner beauty to equip you with a natural radiance and a confident glow

This mask has a unique formula based on the individual properties found in the waters and mud of Castrocaro Terme in Italy. It is enriched with antioxidants CoQ10, Alpha-Lipoic Acid and Vitamin E. The combination of these ingredients helps the mask to regenerate, strengthen and preserves the skin's structure. The mask works to keep skin looking youthful and radiant. The presence of minerals and other key ingredients with an astringent effect reduces the size of pores, signs of redness and skin irregularities. We found that our skin was looking brighter and more radiant after use, making it the perfect product to lift you when you’re feeling a bit worse for wear.

The product is the most effective when used 2-4 times a week. Just massage directly onto cleansed skin and leave to dry for around 5-20 minutes before rinsing off. We'd certainly like to try more products from this skincare range. You can purchase the face mask here as part of their 6 part Ben Essere skincare set for £590 which contains all the brands signature products.

The next mask we wanted to introduce you to is the steinEY from Soley.  Containing Wild Icelandic Herbs and Volcanic Ash, this face mask will make you feel Scandi chic in 10 minutes.

The face mask contains minerals that regulate and balance skin, stimulate cellular metabolism and strengthen skin tissues while also reducing the signs of ageing. Packing in an exfoliating effect, the mask will also help to even out skin texture by removing dead skin cells, toxins and other impurities. The rich volcanic clay from Eyjafjallajökull and the Wild Icelandic birch promote the skin’s natural equilibrium, meaning you will be looking like your best self in no time. Mix ½ a teaspoon of the mask with ½ a teaspoon of water and apply evenly to clean skin with fingertips once a week. Leave it on until it dries and turns a light grey, which should take roughly 10 minutes. You can purchase the mask here for £38

Last, but by no means least, we wanted to introduce you to the Chlorella-Algae Mask from one of our favourite brands, ISUN.

This mask is suitable for all skin types and is ideal for people looking for a calming and hydrating gel mask. The mask contains superfood ingredients such as Chlorella-algae and Aloe Vera, which calms, nourishes, soothes and firms the skin. The lavender and rosemary oils in the mask help to enhance the skin-soothing properties and make this a sensory experience as well as a rejuvenating one. We think that this mask is particularly good for those with sensitive skins and the co-owner Tracey Annette suggested: "Chlorella Algae Mask mixed with plain Natural Yoghurt is also excellent for hyper-sensitive skin conditions such as Rosacea." We're already fans for iSuncare skincare and have to say that this mask left our skin feeling more toned and hydrated and we also liked how fresh-faced we felt all day long. You can purchase the ISUN mask here for £52.00

No pampering session is complete without a face mask and we hope you enjoy trying our favourites too. Make your next ‘me time’ all that bit more special.

With 16 performances spanning across London from Soho, the Barbican and even to the peripheries of Shoreditch; there's something for everyone.  Be it exquisite object and mechanical theatre from France, 19th century stage magic from Finland, a heart-warming Mexican wedding, or the breath taking new circus-theatre, which was at the start of the festival.

Peeping Tom's 32 rue Vandenbranden at The Barbican Theatre

First off we want to see the performance of UK premiere of the Belgium production ‘ Peeping Tom ‘ directed by Gabriela Carrizo (which won the 2015 Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production) described as ‘….disturbing and oddly humorous. They explore an archetypal figure familiar to us all, in a production of astonishing physicality that defies characterisation.’ On at the Barbican Theatre, book your tickets here

Lebensraum by Jakop Ahlbom & Alamo Race Track at The Peacock Theatre

At the Peacock Theatre is Lebensraum, which is by the Dutch visual theatre masters, the brilliant Swedish director Jakop Ahlbom and Alamo Race Track. Their performance is in the genre of a silent movie, based on the magic of Buster Keaton’s The Scarecrow. Quoted in the Telegraph as ‘Like a Charlie Chaplin skit penned by Harold Pinter’ book your tickets here.

Silent Movie Classics screened at the Barbican

Finally to mention, that earlier in the Festival this year rarely-seen silent movie classics with live piano accompaniment was shown. This included discussions, workshops in puppetry and physical/visual theatre led by internationally-renowned professionals. So you see there's something for everyone – enjoy!
