AK Pure Skin - Face Tan Water

With the questionable hours of sunshine with our inclement British weather, we all seem to crave that elusive healthy golden glow, and this is where a good self-tan comes in very handy. However, when it comes to the face, we found that not all tanning products are created equal. And after much trial and error, we at The Amazing Blog, prefer to use natural facial tanning water. Meet another of our #amazingfinds from the Icelandic brand AK Pure Skin with their award-winning Face Tan Water. Whether you wish to enhance your natural complexion or deepen an existing tan, this product is for you.

AK Pure Skin is a unisex beauty brand that offers natural and organic Icelandic skincare. The founders of AK Pure Skin are husband and wife Aron Einar & Kristbjörg Jónasdóttir. Aron is probably best known for being a professional footballer at Qatar Stars League club Al-Arabi and is also the Icelandic national football team captain. Together, they created AK Pure Skin in 2019 after three-plus years of perfecting the formulas and packaging. Kristbjörg explained their inspiration as a mother and athlete, “We wanted to make effective formulas with the best ingredients that slot effortlessly into life and give skin the health and nutrition it needs. Formulas that do for my skin what I try to do for my body.” She went on to say, “Our key focus is developing effective, natural and unisex skincare products made from Icelandic pure water, using only carefully selected ingredients that benefit and enhance the skin’s health to provide the best results possible.”

The brand offers a range of products made with all-natural and organic ingredients, which are cruelty-free and vegan. They have collaborated with Pharmarctica, an Icelandic contract manufacturer and formulator, accredited as GMP certified, and who fulfil the standards required for producing organic and eco-certified cosmetics. With this partnership, AK Pure Skin has achieved a range of natural skincare products that are 100% produced in Iceland and, most importantly, made with pure Icelandic water. 90% of their products have ingredients derived from natural origin; they are free from parabens, PEG, SLS/SLES, silicones, alcohol, petroleum, and nanoparticles. In an interview with Trendnet.is, Kristbjörg said, "The products are made from pure Icelandic water, which may sound like a cliché, but is a very important part of the production because our water is so clean. It allows us to use fewer materials in the products than if they were produced where the water quality is worse." She went on to say, in Akureyri.net, “After three years and incredible fluctuations due to the COVID pandemic, online sales have been growing, and we felt that there was a demand for advice and personal service in-store. We, therefore, took this step of opening a store in Iceland and are extremely happy with the result." The brand also ships globally and considers itself a pure, natural and down-to-earth skincare that prides itself on being ‘Real, Raw and Unique’.

We discovered the Face Tan Water when we were privileged enough to be invited to be one of the judges at The 2023 Beauty Shortlist Awards, where it won ‘The Best Self-Tanner - Face’. One of the first things that impressed us was how it’s made up of 98% natural origin-derived ingredients. It’s easy to apply, gives excellent results and is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive ones. We found it nourished our skin and was also versatile enough to be combined with a serum or moisturiser to make it more of a gradual tan. A great deal of time and care has gone into creating this facial tanning water, and Kristbjörg said, "The Face Tan Water was the first product we developed, so for us, this is our baby and very close to our hearts. In making it, we knew exactly what we wanted: to develop a product that would give you a beautiful, refreshing sun-kissed glow and help even your skin tone."

The key ingredients are pure Icelandic Water, dihydroxyacetone, vegetable glycerin, erythrulose, panthenol, and sodium hyaluronate. There’s also aloe leaf, beta-glucan, calendula flower extract, lemon oil, citric acid and plankton extract.

For facial tanning water, the first ingredient is the most unique; pure Icelandic water provides hydration and nourishment to the skin and is also known for its ancient healing properties.

Dihydroxyacetone and erythrulose; are both natural and organic tanning ingredients. Dihydroxyacetone is derived from sugar cane that reacts with amino acids in the skin to produce a natural-looking tan. Erythrulose works with dihydroxyacetone to provide a long-lasting, even tan. Next is vegetable glycerin, a natural humectant that draws moisture into the skin to leave it hydrated and nourished. This ingredient works well with sodium hyaluronate, which helps to hydrate and plump the skin. Panthenol, aloe leaf and beta-glucan are here to soothe and hydrate. Aloe leaf reduces inflammation and irritation; panthenol contains pro-vitamin B5 to retain moisture levels and shield skin from irritation; and beta-glucan is a natural polysaccharide that improves the skin's texture and appearance, reducing signs of ageing.

Working with the ingredients above are calendula officinalis flower extract, a natural extract with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Lemon fruit oil and citric acid exfoliate and brighten the complexion to reduce the appearance of dark spots and blemishes. And, the plankton extract reduces oxidative stress, protects the cells and fights the signs of premature skin ageing. Since all these ingredients are natural, this Face Tan Water needs natural preservatives to keep the integrity of the product. It uses phenoxyethanol and sodium benzoate; both are natural and prevent the growth of bacteria as well as keep it fresh.

The great thing about facial tanning waters is that their colour can last up to three or four days. This, of course, depends on your skin type and how often you cleanse your face. When considering using facial tanning waters, there are a few things to remember: Tanning drops and moisturisers are typically more subtle and buildable. In contrast, facial tanning waters can provide a more intense colour with just one application. Gradual tans can take longer to build up but can be more forgiving if you make a mistake during application. Avoid using products with exfoliating properties, such as alpha-hydroxy acids or retinoids, for a few days after application; this will prevent premature fading.

When using this Face Tan Water, it took 4-6 hours to develop, and we found that it was best applied at night. It's recommended to prep your skin beforehand by cleansing and gently exfoliating to ensure an even colour. Also, another tip, when we first used the product, we used a water-based serum as a base to make sure we didn’t overdo it! We also applied a moisturiser to dry areas, such as your eyebrows or hairline, to prevent the product from clinging to those areas. It creates a good, even and healthy glow that typically lasts about four days, which we then let gently fade before applying more. And rightfully so, it's a velvety soft moisturiser packed with skin-nourishing organic ingredients that hydrate the skin while gradually building and effortlessly extending a tan for the ultimate year-round glow. Two essential ingredients besides aloe vera comprise certified organic Australian kakadu plum and camellia oil. Both supply nutrients and antioxidants to slow ageing; kakadu plum extract’s rich vitamin C content is responsible for that natural glow, while camellia oil is high in proteins and fatty acids, like oleic acid, which reduces inflammation and helps the skin hold moisture. If you're wondering what gives the lotion a silky finish, it's cetearyl and sorbitan olivates (vegetable emulsifiers), non-ionic emulsifiers that allow rapid absorption.

This has to be one of the best gradual tan lotions we’ve tried. They recommend using it overnight, but we prefer to use it in the morning. WOTNOT Naturals recommends leaving it for 6-8 hours at night to develop and promises it won't stain sheets or clothing. Having worked hard to acquire our ‘real tan’, this lotion works wonders to help prolong a natural sun-kissed glow, and we used it several times a week to achieve the right shade. Best of all, we found that it didn’t dry out the skin as the formula is super-hydrating, and to top it off, it’s fragrance-free. It’s truly one of our #amazingfinds and one we want to buy more of!

Enough about the Gradual Tan Lotion, WOTNOT's Certified Organic Tan Water Mist is a competitor to match. A gentle, non-toxic mist that also provides a gradual and buildable tan, it's carefully formulated with a 3-in-1 formula that ‘tones, tans and hydrates’ while containing nine organic actives to nourish the skin. Like the Gradual Tan Lotion, the Tan Water Mist contains Australian botanical aromatherapy; it fades evenly and naturally, contains zero to no toxins, and is vegan and cruelty-free. Top tip, remember to spray, dab and pat as you go, and wash hands afterwards. We found it gave our skin a buildable and almost instant subtle glow. We love how it’s free of orange tinges, streaks or patchiness – mimicking only a natural tan. Ambre Luxe: Bronzing Foam and Tan Remover Foam

It’s summertime (AKA self-tanner time), and at The Amazing Blog we love how a good self-tanning product boosts our confidence, prevents us from spending hours roasting in the sun, allows us to get a tan from the comfort of our home, and more importantly, gives us a glow that is skin cancer risk-free! We’re always on the look out for a good, new and comment-worthy self-tanner and this new duo from Ambre Luxe with their Bronzing Foam and Tan Remover Foam didn’t disappoint!

Ambre Luxe, is an Australian brand that sells self-tanning products, was started in 2018 by Amanda Bankier and her daughter — they are a mother and daughter team that love anything to do with beauty. Since their inception they have grown into a team of four, and are continuously building on their brand. Currently, Ambre Luxe sells Bronzing Foam, Tan Remover Foam, a Polishing Glove, and Tanning Mitt and they have a couple of new products in development, including a Gradual Tanning Moisturiser. Bankier said, “We are passionate about creating multi-tasking bronzing formulas that deliver on every level, this is our Ambre Luxe brand mission.” Ambre Luxe is cruelty-free and vegan, and although they are an Australian brand, they deliver worldwide. They recently announced that they will be the official tanning partner of Miss Universe Australia 2021. Bankier went on to say, “As confessed self-tan and skin care addicts, we were constantly struggling to find a self-tan that offered potent skincare benefits without compromising on the effectiveness of the tanning actives. So we fixed that, and created our very own. At Ambre Luxe we are passionate about both bronzing perfection and skincare.” All products are paraben-free, include some organic ingredients, and come in containers made with plastic that can be recycled.

Let’s start with the Ambre Luxe’s Bronzing Foam, what we like is that this is that it allowed us to tailor our colour— leave it on for two hours for a subtle glow or eight hours for the darker finish (we preferred the latter). The formula contains 15% DHA, for the newbie self-tanners here, this DHA is in most self tanning products and can be from 5% to 15% in strength. As a general rule, you want to pick a product with a smaller percentage if you have fair skin and a product with a larger percentage if your natural skin tone is medium or dark. However, we have pale skin and flout this rule by nearly always using 15% DHA! Most people with sensitive skin have no issues with any DHA-based products, but to stay on the safe side we’d suggest always to do a patch test. There are also rejuvenating and moisturising ingredients in this Bronzing Foam with marula oil, hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and carrot seed oil. The marula oil is antioxidant and fatty acid rich as well as deeply nourishing, hyaluronic acid is hydrating as it helps the skin attract external moisture, vitamin E repairs damaged cells as well as protects against further damage, and carrot seed oil adds additional antioxidants and nourishment. Ambre Luxe says the tan will last 5–7 days or longer with proper preparation and regular moisturising - NB: don’t use body oil it shortens the lifespan of the tan! We used this by first moisturising dry areas (hands, wrists, feet, ankles, elbows, and knees); you can use your hands to apply or if you’re like us, we preferred to use a Mitt (Ambre Luxe has one here) It’s easy to use and when applied has guide colour, so you’ll know if you miss anywhere. The fragrance is very pleasant being slightly sweet and berry-like but not overpowering. Then after tanning, we waited 5 minutes to let it dry before dressing. They very sensibly suggest avoiding contact with water while the tan is still developing or you may end up with water splatters - not a good look! The company says you can use the foam on your face but recommends against it if you have sensitive skin. One of the great things about this product is that it dries quickly and leaves skin feeling smooth and nourished — unlike some other tanners that we’ve tried, which have left us feeling sticky for hours. We also liked how natural the results were and how it didn’t dry out our skin - we’d recommend this.

Next we used Ambre Luxe’s Tan Remover Foam this works by speeding up the natural skin shedding process that fades tans, which can be done with physical or chemical exfoliants. Physical exfoliants require manually rubbing the tan and skin away, which can leave skin irritated and red. While chemical exfoliants in this Tan Remover Foam, gently removes old tan residue by dissolving the glue that holds dead skin cells together, so no harsh scrubbing is required. While the word ‘chemical’ may sound scary, in this case, it isn’t — the chemical they uses is citric acid, which is derived from citrus fruit. And fruit acids actually have many benefits, including smoothing and hydrating skin. The Tan Remover Foam also includes aloe vera, which is a soothing and calming anti-inflammatory. Ambre Luxe recommends exfoliating 24 hours before tanning. To apply, you can use your hands or use their Polishing  Glove that they’ve designed particularly for this exfoliating step. We were very impressed by its performance and how very gentle this Tan Remover was on the skin. Again the fragrance here was pleasant with a hint of fruitiness. It took next to no time to work - 5 minutes to be precise, then we had a warm shower to remove all residue. For all you tanning addicts, we feel sure that this will fast become your bathroom essential, leaving you now with no excuse for those orange patchy knees and ankles! Again, it’s easy to use and certainly beats soaking in the bath followed by a loofah. This is definitely one of our #amazingfind for tan removal, and has already been used on numerous occasions during this summer.

Marc Inbane - Perle de Soleil

It’s November, the leaves are turning glorious hues of bronze, red and orange. However, our skin at The Amazing Blog has that grey ‘city pallor’ and is much in need of some help to get back its healthy summer glow. We were thrilled to receive some ‘sun beads’ from one of our favourite award-winning tanning brands Marc Inbane, where these ‘Perle de Soleil’ are easy to incorporate into our everyday skincare regime adding a golden shimmer to the complexion.

They have created a safe premium tanning brand that has innovative formulas that allows the consumer to achieve a healthy and natural-looking glow all-year-round. Their products are suitable for all skin types and tones; they’re vegan, cruelty-free and don’t contain any parabens, silicones or sulphates. And most importantly, dermatologically tested and EU compliant. Their products are award-winning and now retailed in over 40 countries, they’re also used by leading make-up artists and recommended by dermatologists.

Perle de Soleil was launched in 2018 and has been developed based on a four-fold tanning technology that uses an airless drop dosage system.  This particular award-winning unisex product is probably the easiest self-tanning product that we have tried in ages, as it integrates seamlessly into daily skincare. All you need to do to achieve that lost summer glow is mix a few drops of Perle de Soleil with your day cream. The convenient ‘one drop’ applicator allows you to create that custom sun-kissed look with the intensity that you want. The brand suggests using 2 to 3 drops to subtly enhance skin colour, or 4-5 drops to create a medium tan and 5+ drops if you are going for a full-on sun-drenched look. You can also progressively increase the number of drops if you want to give the illusion this winter of returning from the sunny ski slopes.
