Booheads: Soniboo

booheads.jpg

Today we are talking about brushing teeth, as we all do every day, if not twice a day. At The Amazing Blog we’re big fans of electronic toothbrushes but always have the dilemma regarding the plastic heads - which are not great for the planet. We don’t want to keep littering our beautiful earth with plastic toothbrush heads, and this is where we found these eco-friendly toothbrush heads, made with natural and environmentally friendly bamboo from Booheads, with their Soniboo collection. This is where brushing teeth has now got a little more earth-friendly!

Ben Caspary, the founder of Booheads, realised a gap in the dental market for a sustainable option for electric toothbrush heads. After much time, research and thought, Ben took the opportunity and launched the first electric toothbrush head made from sustainable, biodegradable, and plant-based materials. He told us, “Booheads was created out of lockdown where I was reflecting on my own consumption habits, and started the question of why we cannot make products more sustainable? After a bit of exploration, I noticed that the electric toothbrush market was not as eco-friendly as our manual equivalents, with a solution not existing. I decided to take the plunge and Booheads was born.” The bamboo is FSC certified, with their bioplastic being made from plant-based. The head is compatible with all the Sonicare range from Philips. All packaging is made from recycled kraft paper and is biodegradable too. The bioplastics can start biodegrading as soon as 90 days, depending on the conditions, and bamboo takes around three years to decompose fully; however, it is 100% organic.

Booheads  Soniboo range are a zero-waste replaceable electric toothbrush heads and a brilliant alternative to the plastic ones. This product is compatible with the full range of Sonicare, DailyClean and ProtectiveClean’s base handles – we also see that they are now producing heads for Oral B handles. As mentioned, the heads are made of plant-based materials with bamboo and bioplastics, which are FSC Certified, renewable and easily disposable. Bamboo is a natural plant grown with zero pesticides or fertilisers. It’s a biodegradable botanical, able to regenerate soil and prevent soil erosion. Bioplastic is a material made from corn starch and castor bean oil, causing it to break down into renewable resources. Cornstarch is derived from corn, which means it doesn’t contain any toxins and is easily compostable in most recycling facilitiesThe bristles are plant-based medium-soft bristles with 62% castor oil and Dupont nylon, whereas the fitment comprises 80% cornstarch and 10% PBAT and 10% talcum powder. If concerned about degrading of the nylon in the bristles, they can be removed with a pair of pliers before disposing of the heads. The structure of this head is designed to get into the crevasses and cavities of the teeth, leaving them sparkly and clean. Even dentists love this product because of it’s efficiency at cleaning while being a great eco alternative (a win-win). We love the array of the four snazzy colours, which not only look pretty and will stop you and your partner won’t get the heads mixed up – eww, after all, who wants to share a toothbrush?! This is another of our #amazingfinds, so If you have an electric toothbrush or thinking about buying one, pair these sustainable toothbrush heads with it, to help the world become a cleaner and greener place. We believe that this is something worth investing in, not to mention how clean your teeth look and feel.  Why not start by buying the Booheads’ Soniboo two-pack here for only £7.99. Hurry, as they are running out, and we’ll be ordering more!

Intelligent: Enzyme Toothpaste & Mouthwash

intelligent.jpg

As brushing teeth is a ritual that we all do at least twice a day, for us, finding a good quality toothpaste and mouthwash is paramount. At The Amazing Blog, we’ve already reviewed many different oral products here. However, today we are featuring Intelligent’s cutting-edge range of natural enzyme based toothpastes and mouthwashes.

Intelligent is an oral care brand based in Taiwan since 2004, and what sets them apart from other oral care companies is that they use natural enzymes in their products. These all contain four natural enzymes and lactoferrin, which can effectively restore the oral saliva antimicrobial power and ecological balance for better oral health. The Intelligent products “adhere to the use of natural extracts of food-grade raw materials, safe and non-toxic ingredients and the use of healthy saliva to improve oral problems.” The toothpastes and mouthwashes contain saliva enzymes, which strengthen the saliva function — including amylase, glucose oxidase, lactoperoxidase, lysozyme, lactoferrin, and pearl powder. The amylase reduces tartar formation, the glucose oxidase decomposes sugar, the lactoperoxidase removes dental plaque, the lysozyme fights bad breath, the lactoferrin is antibacterial, and the pearl powder supplies nutrition. The brand‘s range includes toothpastes for adults, kids, pets and pregnant women, as well as toothbrushes and mouthwashes. Intelligent’s Natural Enzymes Toothpaste won the Pure Beauty Awards London 2020 Silver and a Reddot Award in 2016. In addition, Intelligent founded the Yixue Education Foundation for Ideal Competence, which contributes to children’s oral education.

Intelligent sent us a selection of their Natural Enzymes Toothpastes. The three featured are the Fresh Mint, Fresh Cool Mint, and For Pregnant Women. Did you know that 90% of oral problems are caused by dental plaque? This is where saliva enzymes have the power to actively dispose of dental plaque, where the biological cleaning mechanism of saliva is known to be more effective than traditional toothpastes. These Natural Enzymes Toothpastes clean and protect the enamel, whiten teeth, and treat bad breath, periodontal disease, and mouth ulcers (see the test report for these here). The toothpaste For Pregnant Women contains pearl collagen, vitamin B6, and vitamin B9, all of which have benefits for expecting mothers and even has a test report here on the ingredients. The pearl collagen prevents calcium deficiency and cramps, vitamin B6 soothes vomiting symptoms, and vitamin B9 is an important nutrient for the baby’s development. Intelligent recommends dry brushing with their toothpastes, as wetting the toothpaste will dilute the ingredients and make the toothpaste less effective. The Fresh Mint and Cool Mint also claim to breakdown bacteria, reduce gingivitis and plaque. In addition to the toothpastes, Intelligent also sent us two of their Natural Enzymes Mouthwashes in Mint and Tea. Intelligent’s mouthwashes again have various natural enzymes which help to relieve gum discomfort and improve mouth ulcers as it has a “biogenesis enzymatic clean formula.” They recommend using the mouthwash every day together with one of their Natural Enzymes Toothpastes. Although this is not your go-to cheap toothpaste brand, Intelligent has been in the business of oral hygiene for over 15 years and has proven research and high quality ingredients in their oral care products. What we like about all these products is that they are natural, taste delicious and deliver results. And yes, we think they are worth the investment. To purchase the Natural Enzymes Toothpastes see here from Amazon at £23. The Natural Enzymes Mouthwashes here from their website for $20.

Dr.K CBD: Nano Emulsified Joint Relief Balm

Dr K.jpg

Do your muscles or joints ache? Are pharmaceutical pain relievers not doing the trick for your headache?  If the answer is yes, then we at The Amazing Blog think that Dr.K CBD’s Nano Emulsified Joint Relief Balm  may be just what you need!  As regular readers will know, we’re already big fans of Dr.K CBD with their Nano Emulsified Hand Cream, which we recently wrote about here.

Dr.K CBD  is a British company founded by Dr Ruchira Karunadasa and Manish Patel, who are longtime friends. They created Dr. K CBD to be a brand that respects its customers, behave ethically, and committed to putting quality above everything else. The CBD  they use is extracted using a proprietary supercritical CO2 extraction technique and is purified through the winterization technique. This process is clean and safe and produces an extract that contains 85% active broad-spectrum CBD and no THC. This broad-spectrum CBD extract contains phytocannabinoids and terpenes from the hemp plant, which give the human endocannabinoid system optimum support. The hemp plants that the brand use are grown organically without herbicides or pesticides.  As we mentioned previously with the brand, what sets them apart is the nanotechnology in their topicals. They claim that their Nano Emulsions are 5 x times more effective than similar creams due to the particles being much smaller and thus absorbing more easilyThis turns active cannabinoids into nano-sized droplets; which causes high bioavailability of the CBD in the balm or cream. The brand is keen to flag up that this technology, as it allows the users to get more out of their products. Dr K CBD has oils, face and hand cream, rubs and balms that use CBD to help with sleep, pain, stress, anxiety and wellbeing. To ensure they are of the highest standard and consistency, the company’s CBD products undergo rigorous cannabinoid lab testingThe brand motto says, “Your choice, your body. CBD, done the right way!”

The product we tried is the Nano Emulsified Joint Relief Balm, 60ml jar which contains 300 mg of broad-spectrum CBD. Among its other benefits, when topically applied, CBD is good for muscle health. It helps anti-inflammatory issues and relieves muscle tension, and some say that it can even help MS-induced muscle spasticity. We use CBD balms as pain relief (soreness from arthritis and overdoing it in the gym) and for headaches or migraines relief (an occurrence from too much blue light/screen time). We’ve been using CBD topicals for pain relief and nerve inflammatory issues for quite a while now. As we find in its topical form, the phytocompounds and compounds such as terpenes and flavonoids, are strong enough to provide almost instant relief when massaged into the area of pain. The CBD works in tandem with the endocannabinoid system (see here for a simple explanation) where it springs into action when it senses that the body is out of kilter and promptly stimulates a hormonal release, thus reducing the pain or inflammation.

What we also like about this Nano Emulsified Joint Relief Balm is that it’s completely natural. In addition to broad-spectrum CBD, it has coconut oil, cocoa seed butter, beeswax, sweet almond oil, lavender essential oil and a few emulsifiers. Unlike other CBD Balms, that we have used, this has little or no scent (which we prefer). When these are combined with the CBD, they enhance its soothing qualities. This Joint Relief Balm is one to keep at hand for fast action to soothe aching limbs and joints and, more uncommonly, for combatting headaches or migraines – which is highly effective for us. This product is plastic-free, vegan-friendly, cruelty-free, natural and contains no heavy metals, pesticides, or GMO. To use this balm, simply warm up some of the balm in the palms of your hands, before massaging it into the area of pain. It is recommended to store this product at room temperature, out of reach of children, and away from UV light.  If you think you could benefit from DrK CBD’s 60ml jar of Nano Emulsified Joint Relief Balm, you can buy the product here for £29.99.

Dr.Vegan: Vitamin D3

Dr D.jpg

Does anyone get enough sunlight these days? Having been stuck inside for months, for us at The Amazing Blog, we certainly don’t! So, we were itching to try Dr.Vegan’s Vitamin D3, especially as it’s 100% plant-based and with the added bonus of multiple health benefits. We also like that their slogan says, Dr.Vegan products make a “Better Me. Better Planet.”

Dr.Vegan  is for every kind of diet, all products are vegan or vegetarian, non-GMO and free of lactose, gluten, dairy, allergens, starch, and sugar. The company was founded in summer 2020 with the mission “to bring clarity, simplicity and ethics to your nutrition and supplements.” Dr.Vegan supplements are formulated by expert nutritionists and made in the UK. Their products are shipped worldwide and delivered for free in the UK. Dr.Vegan is all about protecting the planet, so their naturally sourced, plant-based supplements come in a refillable pill tin and are shipped in biodegradable and recyclable packaging. Since their ingredients are in a more bioavailable form, they are more absorbable and effective. And since their supplements come as capsules instead of tablets, they are free of binders and additives. Gordon Lott, the co-founder of Dr. Vegan, has been in e-commerce for 20 years and “is passionate about using technology to simplify the world of nutrition and supplements, empowering customers with easily accessible information to improve their understanding and control over their daily wellbeing.” On Dr.Vegan’s website, you can create a diet profile that shows you what nutrients your diet is missing and what supplements their nutritionists recommend for you. This was impressive, and creating a diet profile took us around five minutes, and all of the supplements they recommended made complete sense.

Dr.Vegan’s Vitamin D3 is good for your bones, muscles, and immunity. Vitamin D also helps your body absorb calcium, keeping your bones and teeth healthy. It is good for your muscles, and specifically your heart, because it supports healthy muscle function. Did you know that low levels of vitamin D can cause heart disease? And lastly, vitamin D is good for your immune system because and keeps it in balance, so it’s not over or under-functioning. We get this vitamin from the sun, but most of us (especially in the UK) don’t get enough sunlight to be vitamin D sufficient, and that’s where this vitamin D3 supplement comes in. Being plant-based, Dr.Vegan’s Vitamin D3 is primarily sourced from the cholecalciferol in Lichen, which is a green algae. The only other ingredients this supplement contains besides vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol from lichen) are brown rice flour and capsule shell (HPMC, vegetable cellulose). Dr.Vegan’s Vitamin D3 comes with 30 capsules, where they advise to take one a day with food. Each capsule contains 2500IU, which is the ideal support for any diet. Public Health England recommends all adults take vitamin D supplements, specifically during the autumn and winter. And during the pandemic, many experts have recommended taking this D supplement to help protect themselves against COVID-19. Our conclusion is that vitamin D is always beneficial, especially right now — and Dr. Vegan has now made it easy for us all to access, with this their ethically sourced vitamin D3 supplements. If you’re lacking sunlight or looking to protect your health, you can buy Dr.Vegan’s Vitamin D3 here for 30 capsules it is £6.75 for a one-off or you can subscribe monthly, saving 15% and pay £5.74.

Great Lakes Gellatin® Co - Collagen Hydrolysate (10 x single servings)

Great Lakes.jpg

With this damp and chilly start to May, we find that this sort of weather plays havoc with our over exercised and achy joints. However, this is where at The Amazing Blog we’ve learnt that taking a good collagen supplement comes into its own, as it reduces joint inflammation and stimulates the collagen synthesis in the body. Meet Collagen Hydrolysate, from the Great Lakes Gellatin® Company, which has 20 different amino acids that help to heal and repair the connective tissue.

The Great Lakes Gellatin® Company is the pioneer of collagen hydrolysate technology. Founded in 1988, it was initially known as Grayslake Gelatin Co (which started production in 1922). They were the first company to research and develop the collagen and gelatin benefits, and ever since has been a market leader in this sector. Great Lakes Gellatin® Co are a family-run business, and was created from the founder’s promise to help and educate others into having a healthier lifestyle. Numerous scientific studies have shown to how collagen hydrolysate supports tendons and ligaments through strengthening the connective tissues, thereby helping to prevent injury and speed up recovery. It also helps muscle mass and strength through promoting lean muscle The cattle from which the collagen is sourced, are grass fed and pastured-raised in Argentina and Brazil, and animal welfare is one of this company’s main priorities. The brand’s products are kosher and free from gluten, MSG, GMO, and verified glyphosate, and easily fit into both the keto and paleo diets. It is also free of allergens and sensitisers: peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, seeds, fish/shellfish, dairy, eggs, soy, wheat, gluten, corn, mustard, celery stalk/leaf, yeast or yeast derivatives. This ground-breaking company also offers a wide range of other flavoured collagen hydrolysates, gelatin and keto products.

We tried the Collagen Hydrolysate (unflavoured) in 10 x sachets a box. This has one ingredient only: 100% bovine hydrolysed collagen powder, which is a derived protein found naturally in bones, skin, and cartilage. This contains amino acids, glycine, proline and hydroxyproline which are responsible for the growth and repair of the body. In addition, collagen represents almost a third of the natural proteins found in our bodies. However, as time goes by, the production of collagen declines, which where a hydrolysed collagen supplement comes into play. It supports the digestive tract, increases joint health, improves bones density, tightens and hydrates skin, and strengthens hair and nails. It also has the added bonus of aiding sleep and concentration. The effects of bovine hydrolysed collagen on joints and bones have been scientifically proven to act as a kind of ‘intracellular glue’ giving support, shape and bulk to the blood vessels which feed bones and joints as well as vital organs such as the heart, kidneys and liver – and yet it’s not a medicine. This low molecular weight protein is easily digested just a few minutes after eating. It will not congeal because it has been hydrolyzed for quick assimilation and improved hydration to the connective tissue. We found that these Great Lakes Gellatin® Co Hydrolysed Collagen unflavoured powders to be colourless and odourless; they dissolve quickly in cold or hot beverages, which means you can put them in your coffee, tea or smoothie (see our berry smoothie above). It is also possible to dissolve them into soups or mix into yoghurt. One sachet (6 grams) or two (12grams) a day are enough. We stirred one sachet into our smoothie until the collagen powder dissolved - about 10-20 seconds - it’ll be quicker in hot liquids. If you need a little inspiration, you can take a look at their Recipes Page here for more ideas. To purchase Great Lakes Gellatin® Co Collagen Hydrolysate 10 x Single Servings, go to Amazon UK here  at £5.99.
